Your customers stopped Googling you. They ask ChatGPT instead.

"Best agency for B2B lead gen." "Which tool should I use for X." "Who should I hire to fix my onboarding." These are the questions your buyers used to type into Google. Now a growing number of them ask an AI assistant, and they act on whatever it answers. The shift happened quietly. No algorithm update, no email, no warning.

Here is the uncomfortable part: most small businesses never come up in those answers. If you run an agency, a small SaaS, or a service business, there is a real chance you are invisible to the tool your customers now trust most. And the models can only recommend businesses they have actually heard of.

Why This Is Different From SEO

For twenty years the game was ranking on a results page. You optimized, you linked, you waited. AI recommendation works differently. When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity to recommend a business, the model does not show ten blue links. It names a few, with reasons. You are either in that short answer or you do not exist for that customer.

And the model does not decide you are good by reading your homepage. It leans on sources it already trusts: review sites, industry directories, comparison articles, real conversations on forums. If your name is not in those places, no amount of website polish puts you in the answer.

How to See Where You Stand

You can check this yourself in about ten minutes, for free. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, and in each one ask the question a real customer would ask. Not your business name. The need behind it.

  • "Best [your category] for [type of customer]"
  • "Who should I hire to [the problem you solve]?"

Then look for three things: does your business get named at all, is the description accurate, and who shows up instead of you. Write it down. That is your baseline.

The Fix Is Unglamorous

If you are missing, the fix is rarely your website. Make your name and details consistent everywhere. Get a few recent reviews on the platforms your industry actually uses. Get mentioned somewhere real, a roundup or a relevant thread. Answer one question your customers actually ask, in public, in plain language a model can quote.

None of that is glamorous. All of it works. Run the test again a month later and you will see it move.

Why It Matters Now

The businesses that do well over the next few years will not be the ones with the biggest marketing budget. They will be the ones who noticed the question changed and answered it early. Your customers already switched. The only question is whether the AI they ask has heard of you.
